Timeline

  • Date of Birth

Gary was born on this date in Dundee.

  • Signed For Dundee United

Gary signed on an 'S' form from Fairmuir Boys Club and progressed through the youth programme. A Scotland youth, he played in the 1989 Under-16 World Cup final against Saudi Arabia, and went on to play as a Scotland Under-21. He was also a twice winner of BP Youth Cup with United.

  • Because of BSkyB transmission our visit to Ibrox was brought forward to the Wednesday evening. It was a much changed United lineup with Dave Narey, Gijs Steinmann and Alex Cleland all returning to duty after lengthy absences, Gary Bollan was given a place on the bench for the first time, too. There could be no disputing that Rangers had the better of the first half. In the first minute Mo Johnson forced a save from Alan Main with a header and that was indicative of the first half proceedings. In the 32nd minute Maurice Malpas made a timely stop and then Jim McInally cleared a Gough header off the line, but minutes later we did fall behind when a long throw by Gary Stevens was headed away by John Clark, but only to Ian Ferguson who dived to head in at the far post. Four minutes later and with more than a hint of off-side against Johnston and Walters, the Scottish internationalist broke clear down the right before squaring the ball to Walters who somehow contrived to send the ball past the far post of an unguarded net! Before half-time we served notice of what was to transpire in the second half when a John O'Neil cross caused panic in the heart of the Rangers defence and ended with Billy McKinlay hooking a shot just over.

  • Naturally, the main interest centred round the first appearance of Argentinian striker Victor Ferreyra. His introduction to Scottish Football was typical. In the first minute he controlled the ball on his chest, only to be immediately bundled off the ball by a defender. However, it was Duncan Ferguson who was held down by Chris McCart to earn us the first of two penalties during the match. Duncan took the kick himself, but unfortunately screwed his shot well wide of the post. United fans first sight of Victor Ferreyra in real action saw the Argentinian speed past Philliben only to be brought down by Billy Thomson who protested his innocence too strongly to the referee and was booked. This time skipper Maurice Malpas made no mistake from the spot to score his first goal of the season. Motherwell, however, hit us on the break in the 32nd minute when Dolan's through ball split the defence and Ian Angus ran on to shoot low past Alan Main. Their equality was short-lived, however, because we went back into the lead in the 39th minute. John Clark's free-kick was controlled by Ferreyra but he was tackled and the ball broke to Gary Bollan who immediately fired the ball past Billy Thomson for his first goal for the club.

  • The final derby of the season turned out to be one of the most one-sided for years and culminated in us equalling our biggest wins of the season. The Tangerines stamped their authority on this game from the very first whistle and forged ahead after eight minutes. Gary Bollan's long ball down the middle was headed on by Christian Dailly into the path of Paddy Connolly and he took advantage of hesitancy in the home defence to plant the ball just inside Mathers' left hand post. The second goal was a real gem. Christian Dailiy picked up a loose ball on the halfway line and found Michael O'Neill wide on the left. By the time the Irishman had delivered his cross Christian Dailly had advanced up field to crash a diving header from six yards out past the helpless and totally exposed Mathers. Dodds then had a penalty claim refused and was then sent off for an off the ball incident with Freddy van der Hoorn as the Dundee skipper vented his frustration.

  • Last Appearance - Hearts 3 - 0 Dundee United

Ian McCall made changes to the United line-up in a bid to find the first points of the season. Some changes were enforced whilst others were made in a bid to find the winning formula. Particularly in defence and midfield.
