Hainey played junior football for Johnstone Burgh before joining Partick Thistle during the 1959-60 season. Within a month of stepping up to the senior grade, he had already established himself as a first team regular. Partick qualified for the 1963-64 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and Billy scored their first ever European goal in a 4-1 victory over Glentoran in Belast in September 1963. United manager made an attempt to bring Billy to Tannadice in November 1964, but the deal broke down.
However, after six years and over 100 appearances for Thistle, Billy eventually signed for United eighteen months later for a reported fee of £8,000. He made his debut the following night against Hearts at Tynecastle. He scored his first goal for the Club five days later, heading home the winner in a victory over Rangers at Tannadice. United finished in their highest ever league position at the end of that season, and qualified for Europe for the first time.
Billy became the first player to come on as a substitute in major competition for United, when he replaced Dennis Gillespie in a League Cup tie against Dundee at Tannadice at the start of the 1966-67 season, and in the same match became the first United substitute to score to help United to a 2-0 win. Billy was a regular in the line-up that season and scored some vital goals, but none more important than United's first ever European goal - just as he had done with Partick. Grabbing the opener in a 2-1 win over Barcelona in Spain, he then scored a stunning second goal against the Spaniards in the return leg at Tannadice as United recorded a famous double. At the end of the season, Billy was named in the sixteen man squad that travelled to America to represent Dallas Tornado in the United Soccer Association.
By October 1967 Billy had dropped out of the first team and was playing regularly in the reserves. He was transfer listed at his own request, but came back into the side to score a double in the Dewar Sheild Final against St Johnstone, and appeared sporadically through the season. Remarkably, the classic 5-6 Scottish Cup defeat to Hearts at Tannadice in February was the only time in Billy's time at Tannadice where the team lost in a match that he scored in.
Given a free transfer at the end of that season, he returned to his hometown to sign for newly promoted St Mirren, and after two seasons at Love Street he went to Northern Ireland to play for Portadown. Two years later he returned to Scottish Junior level, finishing his playing days with Ayrshire side Beith.
Billy was inducted into the Dundee United Hall of Fame in 2010.

With the game all square at half-time and no goals, few would have expected what was to come in the second half. Five goals were scored by they were not shared evenly, leaving United to nurse a heavy defeat at Ibrox with Alex Ferguson getting a double.
