Biography

Sam has been at Easter Road since the age of 12 and made his first team debut for Hibs as a substitute against Rangers in January 2012. After being selected for the Scotland under-19 side in August, he signed a three year contract extension, and was then loaned out to Cowdenbeath in January 2013, but after just two appearances a knee injury ended his season prematurely. Recovering well from his injury, he became a regular in the Hibs side during the 2013/14 season, was named SPFL young player of the month for February, and made his Scotland under-21 debut in a March friendly match against Hungary.

After the Edinburgh side's relegation to the Championship, Sam continued to be a first team regular as they reached, but ultimately fell short in the play-offs. After just a handful of games in the first half of the 2015/16 season, Sam was sent out on loan to Livingston in January 2016 for the remainder of the season.

The loan spells continued with a season long spell at Dumbarton agreed on deadline day in August 2016, and a year later Ray McKinnon brought him to Tannadice for another year-long deal to try and help United gain promotion at the second time of asking.

  • Signed For Dundee United

Sam has been at Easter Road since the age of 12 and made his first team debut for Hibs as a substitute against Rangers in January 2012. After being selected for the Scotland under-19 side in August, he signed a three year contract extension, and was then loaned out to Cowdenbeath in January 2013, but after just two appearances a knee injury ended his season prematurely. Recovering well from his injury, he became a regular in the Hibs side during the 2013/14 season, was named SPFL young player of the month for February, and made his Scotland under-21 debut in a March friendly match against Hungary.

  • United commenced their 2017/18 campaign with a home game in the Betfred Cup against Raith Rovers. The team contained six players making their debuts for United, with four further new players on the bench. Indeed, of the starting eleven only William Edjenguele and Mark Durnan started Dundee United’s previous competitive fixture in Hamilton only seven weeks earlier.

  • For the second successive season, United faced a home game against Cowdenbeath in the group stages of the Betfred Cup. United made three changes from the game against Buckie Thistle, with Tam Scobbie, Scott Fraser and Matty Smith coming in for James Keatings, Patrick N’Koyi and Mark Durnan, all of whom were injured.

  • United were eliminated from this year’s Scottish Cup after a 4-2 defeat by Premiership high flyers Aberdeen at a freezing Pittodrie. Csaba Laszlo made three changes from United’s previous game, the 3-0 home defeat to Morton two weeks earlier. Craig Slater, Matty Smith and new signing from Hamilton Grant Gillespie came into the team at the expense of Thomas Mikkelsen, Scott McDonald, and the injured Paul Quinn. United’s injury woes continued with Quinn’s absence forcing another defensive reshuffle with Mark Durnan being the club’s only fit centre half. Gillespie had to make his United debut in an unfamiliar right back role with Stewart Murdoch being forced to play as a makeshift central defender.
