Timeline

  • Date of Birth

Danny was born on this date in Edinburgh.

  • Signed For Dundee United

Danny had played for Hutchison Vale Boys Club as a youth and Leith Athletic (non-league), and was with Berwick Rangers before he signed for United.

  • Craig Levein made two changes to the starting eleven that leaked five goals at Motherwell at the weekend, with David Robertson and new signing Danny Grainger stepping in for Prince Buaben and Jordan Robertson. Stephen Frail took charge of Hearts for the first time as caretaker manager, and brought in Andrius Velicka and Saulius Mikoliunas at the expense of the injured Ibrahim Tall and Kestutis Ivaskevicius.

  • The Setanta cameras were at Tannadice for a lunch-time kick-off as Dundee United hosted Motherwell in a crucial match in the battle for third place. United - who had defeated Motherwell 1-0 at Tannadice earlier in the season - made one change to the starting lineup from the League Cup Final which they had been so desperately unlucky to lose the previous week. Jim O’Brien, who had been cup-tied, replaced Prince Buaben, who was set to square off against Mexico later in the week for the Ghanian national side. The sight of Jon Daly on the bench marked a welcome boost to Craig Levein’s striking options, while Eric Odhiambo, who scored a brace in a midweek reserve encounter with Hearts, also made the squad. Motherwell, competing for the first time in 10 days, and in their fourth consecutive away match as problems with the Fir Park pitch persist, brought in midfielder Keith Lasley ahead of Steven McGarry.

  • Following on from two wins on the bounce – at home to Inverness in the league and away to Airdrie United in the league cup – United travelled to Easter Road for an SPL clash with Colin Calderwood’s Hibernian. Peter Houston made four chances to his starting line-up from the 2-0 win at Airdrie midweek: in came Keith Watson, Scott Robertson, Jon Daly and Johnny Russell with Barry Douglas, Stuart Armstrong, Lauri Dalla Valle and Ryan Dow dropping to the bench. United were hoping to keep up their impressive record against Hibs having only lost one game in the last ten meetings between the two sides: that came a week before United’s Scottish Cup win in May 2010.

  • Last Appearance - Motherwell 0 - 2 Dundee United

United’s last game of the season was a visit to Fir Park to face Motherwell who had beaten Peter Houston’s side to third place in the league and subsequently a Champions League qualifier with second placed Rangers banned from Europe having entered administration earlier in the year. Houston made four changes to his starting line-up from the impressive 1-0 win over Celtic at Tannadice the previous week. Gavin Gunning and Robbie Nielson dropped out altogether with injuries whilst Willo Flood and Gary Mackay-Steven were demoted to the bench. In came Keith Watson, Stuart Armstrong, Danny Swanson and Johnny Russell. It was a day of emotion at Fir Park with players on both sides playing their last matches for their respective clubs. Motherwell skipper Stephen Craigan received a tremendous reception as he led the home side out for the last time after making 367 appearances for the club over the course of two spells at Fir Park. For United it was farewell to three heroes who had lifted the Scottish Cup in 2010 with Dusan Pernis, Scott Robertson and Danny Swanson all moving onto pastures new.
