Viking were founded in Stavanger in 1899, and won their first major trophy, the Norwegian Cup, in 1953 before going on to become the dominant side in the Norwegian League in the 1970s, winning four consecutive league titles, and the double in 1979. In 1982 they won the League title once more, and this was also the year that they met Dundee United in the 2nd Round of the UEFA Cup. A late spree of goals saw United leave Norway with a 3-1 victory, and the low key 0-0 draw at Tannadice was enough to take United through. Viking hit tough times soon after, and were relegated in 1987. However a return to the top League in 1988 was followed by another Cup win in 1989 and the League championship in 1991. They have since remained a top League side in Norway, and knocked Chelsea out of the UEFA Cup in 2002-03.
