Although they only played in two matches against United, the 1983 Italian champions, AS Roma, go down in United history as one of the Club's most controversial opponents. Beating United 3-2 on aggregate in the semi-final of the European Cup in 1984, the Italians later admitted to bribery of a semi-final official, namely French referee Michel Vautrot. The revelation to this day leaves a very bitter taste in the mouths of Arabs, with United possibly having been denied a dream European Cup final with Liverpool.
