Unveiled at the start of August, prior to the first away trip of the 2019-20 Championship campaign against Partick Thistle the following day, the new Macron "Alternate" kit immediately became a huge hit with the fans.
After a ten year spell with Nike, United had announced a deal with Italian sportswear manufacturers Macron in March 2019. Formed in 1970s, Macron entered the professional football market in the 1990s and by the 2010s were well known across Europe. Already kit provider for the likes of Hibernian, Ross County and Motherwell in Scotland, their deal with United began in the summer of 2019, with the new "Primary" kit released in July.
The predomanently black shirt featured tangerine horizontal pinstripes, with a tangerine neckline and cuffs. The Macron logo, on the right breast and on the shoulders, was also tangerine. At the very bottom of the back of the shirt was a large embossed black lion rampant logo. Both the black shorts and socks had flashes of tangerine.
Utilita, now in their second year as main shirt sponsor, appeared on the front of the shirt in tangerine and white text, with ongoing club partners JF Kegs and Norman Jamieson appearing on the upper and lower portions of the back as they had done the previous year. Paint-Tec agreed a two-year deal as official shorts sponsor starting this year, and local HGV recovery firm Newtyle Commercials Ltd also signed up as sock sponsors.
The launch saw members of the first team taken on a team of United supporting kids at the University of St Andrews sports hall, with the players in the new away kit and the kids wearing the home kit. Then the kids changed into the new away kit for the photoshoot.
