This shirt was produced for a single match only. It was created for the first of Maurice Malpas' two testimonial matches. This shirt was worn against Rangers, a match played at Tannadice in front of 12428 fans on the 31st July 1991. It was very much based on the Bukta away shirt design for that coming season of 1991/92, but obviously made using tangerine material rather than white.
The shirt had the embossed club crest throughout the tangerine material, with thin black trim. The polo collar had a standard placket and two button design, with a black and white inset. The Belhaven logo was replaced for the game by match sponsor R&A Finance, printed in Black text across the front of the shirt. R&A Finance Corporation Ltd were based in Union Street, Dundee and were commercial finance specialists. Under the club badge there was a reference to the match with the words "MAURICE MALPAS TESTIMONIAL MATCH 1991" embroidered in black.
This particular shirt had the number 8 on the back and worn by Billy McKinlay on the night. The shirt was kindly donated to the archive to be photographed by life-long Arab, Doug Miller.
A testimonial match for the Scottish Football Writers Association Player of the Year, Maurice Malpas, saw United beat Rangers 3-1 at Tannadice. Michael O'Neill and Hamish French (2) scored for United. Ally McCoist got a consolation for Rangers in the 81st minute.
