Biography

The former Montrose, Raith Rovers and Dundee striker had a spell as a player with United towards the end of his career, forming a productive attacking partnership with a youthful Paul Sturrock. He returned to Kirkcaldy in 1978 where he eventually became manager after retiring.

Manager Jim McLean brought Gordon back to Tannadice in July 1983, and he spent six seasons with United as first team coach. After short spells with Dundee as manager and Dunfermline as assistant manager, he returned to Tannadice in 1993 under Ivan Golac after coach Paul Sturrock left to take the St Johnstone managers job, and was on the coaching team when United lifted the Scottish Cup for the first time in the clubs history. After Golac's sacking in March 1995, Gordon became caretaker manager, assisted by Paul Hegarty and Maurice Malpas, taking charge of two matches before the appointment of Billy Kirkwood. He remained at Tannadice under both Kirkwood and Tommy McLean, leaving the club in 1998.
