A former player with spells at Livingston, Cowdenbeath and East Fife, Tam played predominantly at junior football level including captaining the Scottish junior international side, before moving into management at the age of 32. It was after five years in charge of Kelty Hearts that Tam arrived at Tannadice, in January 2019, when he was appointed Head of Tactical Performance as part of the club's Academy.
He stepped up to coaching the Under-18s squad in 2020, and a year later, following the departure of Micky Mellon, Tam was appointed as Head Coach of the first team, making him the club's first internal managerial appointment since Peter Houston. Appointed with an eye to giving more first team chances to the Academy graduates, the manager surprised everybody by leading the Club to their highest-placed finish in nine years, and secured European football for the first time in a decade.
However, just a few weeks into the close season, with Courts willing to talk to other clubs, the Club and the manager reached an agreement to let Courts go with immediate effect.
