A former Youth player for Dundee and Forfar Athletic, Jack dropped to junior level with Camelon Juniors before joining Clyde in 1999. After five years at Broadwood, he moved down to Hartlepool United where his time was spent mainly sidelined through injury. He returned to Scotland and became a regular with both Falkirk and St Mirren, winning a Scotland B cap in a match against Northern Ireland at Broadwood in April 2009. After short spells with Hamilton and Dunfermline he had to retire from playing with a serious knee injury at the age of 34, and went into coaching with Dumbarton, becoming Assistant Manager in 2011.
Starting out in management with Alloa Athletic, Jack then led St Mirren to the Scottish Championship title in 2018 before moving on to Sunderland. He led the Black Cats to the League One play-off final but just missed out on promotion and was sacked five months later. He was appointed Hibernian manager in November 2019, taking them to their highest League finish in 16 years and a Scottish Cup final. Guiding them to a League Cup final place the following season, he was surprisingly let go due to poor League form. Following the departure of Tam Courts in June 2022, Jack was appointed Head Coach at Tannadice after a six month break.
His start to Tannadice was a memorable yet ultimately catastrophic one. After a draw against Kilmarnock, he guided United to a fantastic 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League third round qualifer, but subsequent defeats to Livingston, Hearts and St Mirren, along with a 7-0 crushing in the away leg against AZ began to spell a premature end to his term as manager. A record home defeat of 9-0 against Celtic proved to be the final nail for Jack, as he was sacked two days later.
