Match Report

Injuries to Brian Welsh and Sandy Robertson, plus the enforced absence of Billy McKinlay on international duty, meant it was all change yet again for the visit of Hamilton. Territorially, United dominated from the start - Robbie Winters miskicked in front of goal after just a couple of minutes and that was typical of United's luck in the first period.

Scott Crabbe did beat Cormack in goal after 14 minutes, but his free-kick rebounded off the face of the bar. The first threat posed by Hamilton followed a minute later when John McQuade hit a shot on the turn, but Ally Maxwell got down well to save. Immediately, United raced to the other end and should have scored. Andy McLaren's cross from the right was flicked on by Robbie Winters, but Scott Crabbe failed to finish at the far post under pressure from a defender. Had that gone in at that stage, they might not have had to endure the agony which was to ensue.

Hamilton were penned right back, but despite a string of inviting passes from Andy McLaren, no one got on the end of any. Calamity then struck in the 33rd minute. Hamilton in only their second attack of the game went ahead. Gary Clark hooked the ball back from the right-hand side byeline for John McQuade to volley high into the net from 10 yards. United regained their composure after a sticky spell and got an unexpected boost a minute from half time when Baptie was ordered off after a clash with Scott Crabbe who was booked for his part in the incident.

That numerical advantage wasn't wholly apparent at the start of the second period as Hamilton successfully regrouped immediately after the interval. However, in the 58th minute Grant Johnson split Accies' defence with a through ball for Andy McLaren to run on to and his cross from the right was headed home by Steven Pressley via a defender's leg and the post. Relief reverberated around Tannadice and at last United looked really dangerous.

A great run and cross by Robbie Winters saw Paddy Connolly's first time effort sneak past the far post after 61 minutes. Accies relieved the pressure on them for the next ten minutes, but United came back even more forcefully and with eighteen minutes left, United got the goal they so desperately needed. Andy McLaren slipped the ball back into the middle for Paddy Connolly to sweep in a shot which Cormack blocked with his legs, only for the ball to cannon back off Paddy past a helpless Cormack.

Ten man Accies sent on three fresh pairs of legs with seven minutes remaining and almost immediately scored, but Ally Maxwell tipped over Martin Mclntosh's header to ensure United of their first ever victory in the First Division. The goals may have been of the scrappy variety, but no one with Tannadice leanings was too perturbed about that - victory was all that mattered!

CLUB COMMENT - "It was a very welcome win. The whole side played well, but there wasn't enough penetration up front." - BILLY KIRKWOOD, MANAGER.
