December 30th was the dateline for this dark chapter in what was all round a miserable season for Albion. They arrived at Tannadice with only one victory from 16 and Sammy Baird's side had relegation written all over it even before the turn of the year! And things went from bad to worse on that cold December afternoon as United, in an
all black ensemble, turned on the powerplay. Two United players bagged hat-tricks in the goal stampede. Here is a run down of the rout.
3 minutes - A cross from Tommy Millar was teed-up by Davie Wilson for lan Scott to wheel and hit a left-footer out of Murray s reach.
6 minutes- Murray failed to smother a shot from Davie Wilson - lan Scott had a go, which was blocked before Finn Seemann
thundered home the rebound.
15 minutes - The best goal so far - lan Mitchell dodged scything legs as his path took him away from goal, but he turned quickly to hit a scorcher past the keeper.
24 minutes - Although he looked in an off side position as Ian Scott tapped in a square ball, the fourth goal was allowed to stand.
37 minutes - The Albion defence failed to cut out a long lob from Jimmy Briggs and Mogens Berg met it on the drop to score number five.
47 minutes - Ian Scott unselfishly squared the ball for Ian Mitchell to score the first of three in a three minute blitz.
49 - Centre-half Corrigan blazed a diving header into his own net as Finn Seemann powered over a cross.
50 minutes - Probably the pick of the bunch - Ian Scott gave Murray no chance with a sizzling left-footer to complete his hat-trick.
83 minutes - Ian Mitchell did likewise as he embarked on a mazy run, rounding the keeper to side-foot the ninth. (See Photo)
Shame that only 5,000 hardy souls witnessed history in the making because not only was this Albion's heaviest ever defeat, but it remains, United's biggest winning margin in the top flight of Scottish football.
