Morton were visitors to Tannadice for this quarter-final tie. The match took place on March 1 and due to bad weather it was United's first action in three weeks, since, in fact, their 6-2 dismissal of Ayr United in the previous round. Unfortunately that rustiness was all too evident in the early stages as Morton dominated, thanks largely to Scandinavian Per Bartram. In only four minutes the Dane had a goal disallowed, but he nodded down for Joe Mason to open the scoring ten minutes later. Unbelievably, despite Morton's early domination, United were ahead by the half hour mark. Left-back Kerr brought down lan Scott in the box in the 23rd minute. Kenny Cameron did an efficient job of the penalty award to equalise. Then six minutes later, a Davie Wilson cross was headed out to Ian Mitchell whose first-time shot from 20 yards gave Nielsen no chance. But Morton persisted in attack and two minutes later were level when a neat dribble by Joe Harper ended with a clever pass to Per Bartram who beat Donald Mackay with a low shot. That Dane then invaded the United goal three times. In the 50th minute with a header; in the 69th minute he slid in a Mason pass; finally he knocked in an Allan pass, but quite remarkably all three were adjudged off-side. Per Bartram however, eventually got his reward when he set up the winner for Joe Harper with only three minutes left. Ironically, the Dane looked more off-side when he set off than on any of the three previous occasions.
