The first Dundee derby of the season turned into a ten goal thriller at Dens Park. Stuart Markland came into the starting eleven for the first time this season in place of Tommy Traynor, while Kenny Cameron was recalled and named on the bench.
The game opened at a furious pace with chances at both ends. A shot from Stuart Markland sailed just over before Alex Bryce twice tested Hamish McAlpine. United eventually opened the scoring after 14 minutes, Andy Rolland sliding in a pass from Joe Watson for the first of many goals. Mounting Dundee pressure brought them a 34th minute equaliser through Gordon Wallace's header, and a minute from the interval Alex Bryce put them ahead with a low shot.
A deluge of goals at the start of the second half saw Jocky Scott hit Dundee's third in the 56th minute with Alex Bryce making it four just two minutes later with a long range strike. United fell four goals behind when Jocky Scott converted a 65th minute penalty. An Alan Gordon header pulled one back for United, but Dundee immediately added a sixth with Gordon Wallace scoring his second. Two late United goals from Doug Smith from the spot and Andy Rolland did nothing other than put a better complexion on the score. Dundee had waited years for a league win over United and on this afternoon, they certainly did it in style, recording it in the highest scoring league derby to date. United will have felt even more aggrieved to have conceded nine goals in their first two league games.
