League Cup (Sectional Tie)
Alex Cropley (59)
Jimmy O'Rourke (pen.) (71)
R Gordon (Glasgow) (Referee)
Travelling to Easter Road for the Club's second League Cup tie, Jim Henry (virus), Kenny Cameron (leg injury) and Davie Wilson dropped out of the side who played at home to Kilmarnock on the opening day of the season (the latter named on the bench), making way for Walter Smith, Jackie Copland and Tommy Traynor.
For much of the first half, Hibs played openly and aggressively and had the best of the play, with United doing their best to contain the home side as they battled for the opener.
It was a second half double, though, one of which was from the penalty spot, which sunk United in the end. As they had done during the first half, the United defence held the Hibs attack in check convincingly and it looked increasingly likely that at least one point would be banked in the Tannadice coffers. Just on the hour, however, Hibs struck with a snap goal. Alex Cropley was the man who gave Hamish McAlpine no chance and minutes later the winger was pulled down by Andy Rolland and Jim O'Rourke scored from the spot. This proved too much for the Tannadice lads. Despite a soundness in defence and some bright leading up work, a lack of sharpness in front of goal cost them dear.
