United welcomed Hibernian back to Tannadice for what would be the clubs' third meeting within a month. With back-to-back six goal defeats to Dundee and Derby County still fresh in the mind, the manager made two changes to the United front line, with Kenny Cameron and youngster Alan Devlin coming in for Alec Reid and Jackie Copland. Kerr opted to stick with the more experienced Don Mackay in goal, having named him in the midweek Texaco Cup team in place of Hamish McAlpine. Kicking off, United elected to play with the wind in their favour.
A fourth minute chance for Joe Watson was thwarted by a good save from Jim Herriot. Next for United, 17 year old Alan Devlin was unlucky not to score with a terrific drive on the volley which Herriot just managed to get a finger tip to. Chances for Hibs at the other end rattled the United back line and in the 26th minute, the Edinburgh side took the lead. Unable to deal with a high cross, the United defence were spectators as Alex Cropley lofted a ball into the box for Jimmy O'Rourke to head home. Despite Hibs' confidence, United were able to fight back and with 35 minutes gone, Kenny Cameron pulled a goal back for the home side, pouncing on a poor clearance. The final action of the first half saw Herriot forced into another fine save from a 20 yard Andy Rolland strike.
Six minutes into the second half, Hibs restored their lead. An unstoppable strike from Pat Stanton capped off a move that saw him move past four United players before blasting the ball past Don Mackay. Six minutes later, Johnny Hamilton made it 3-1, capitalizing on a goalkeeping error to score his farewell goal in a Hibs' shirt. There was to be no fightback from United despite a substitution after the hour mark and in 71 minutes, Stanton scored again to round off a comfortable win for the visitors and another bad day at the office for United.
