Dundee Hibs were anxious to open their Second League programme with a win, and, although they lost to Leith Athletic by 3 goals to 2, the Hibs had no reason to feel ashamed of their performance. The spectators, of whom there was a large company, witnessed a rousing game. If Saturday's exhibition is a criterion of what is to be expected from the Tannadice Park team they should draw big crowds. There is merit in the Hibs' team. In some parts it is exceptionally good, but there are some weak spots to be remedied, and certainly greater attention to training is much to be desired. Before the game finished, several of the "wearers o' the green" were rather short of wind.
In one important respect there was no comparison between the teams. The Leith men had organisation and understanding, which could not be looked for in a team whose members were to a great extent strangers to each other, but time will rectify this weakness in the Hibs' team, an they should do well in the Second Division. Enterprise deserves success, and the Hibs' management is nothing if not enterprising.
The new players were closely watched, and several of them created a very favourable impression. In this category were Miller, left back; Robertson, centre half; Fyffe, inside left; and J Collins, outside left. The ex-Falkirk back is a player of ripe experience. He was none too sure at the start, but he settled down to a useful game, and time and again he cleared his lines in great style. Robertson is probably "the catch of the season." He is a tremendous worker, and he has a fine conception of a half-back's duty to the men in front of him. Robertson is game to the last. Fyffe is a clever forward. His footwork is a neat, and he distributes play to good advantage. In J Collins he has a very able partner. Collins is on the light side, and rather diminutive, but he is a player of the Lennie type - slippery as an eel.
Yule was not a success in the centre position. He failed to link up the wings, and the Leith centre-half was too much for him. T Collins and O'Gara, who formed the right wing, began alright, but they were far from effective in the second half. In the half-back line, which was the best department in the team, Loney and Boland, two of last season's players, were capital workers. Boland gave a surprisingly fine display. Welsh, the right back, did excellent service until the pace told the tale upon his physical resources. The right back is built on liberal lines, and there was much promise in his display. Tullis was rather disappointing in goal. The first and third points against the Hibs ought to have been saved by the goalkeeper, but Tullis will no doubt gather more confidence as the season progresses, and prove as good a custodian in senior circles as he was in junior football.
