On two visits to Broadwood, United have allowed Airdrie to come back and claim a point after going ahead and then failing to kill the game off. There was disappointing news before the start with Dave Bowman ruled out, so Grant Johnson took his place. After a quietish opening United went ahead in the 14th minute. Robbie Winters played the ball into the box from the right. Sweeney made a hash of his clearance and the ball ran to Gary McSwegan who controlled the ball before advancing to neatly clip the ball over Martin.
There were chances to extend that lead, most notably when Robbie Winters drove an angular shot just past the far post after the airdrie defence had been opened up. Increasingly and worryingly Airdrie posed more and more of an attacking threat. Ally Maxwell blocked a Mclntyre header and twice saved well from Boyle immediately before the break.
Two minutes after the restart, Sweeney almost headed a Gary McSwegan cross past his own keeper, but disappointingly from virtually that point on it was Airdrie who dominated. Within a couple of minutes Ally Maxwell was at full stretch to save from Cooper, but despite Airdrie's possession they created few real chances. In view of his earlier saves it was ironic that Ally Maxwell was at fault when the home side did equalise, as he came for Bonar's inviting cross from the left and Steve Cooper rose to head over for what proved to be the equaliser.
Airdrie maintained the momentum to the end and Cooper headed wide when well placed to prevent a damaging afternoon proving even more costly.
"After a reasonable first half performance, we were very disappointing in the second and you could sense that an Airdrie equaliser was coming." - Billy Kirkwood
