In many ways this was a rerun at Ibrox, only in this instance there seemed even less likelihood of either team scoring. And for the third consecutive match. United were to lose a penalty and the implications of John Robertson's conversion near the end was to have far reaching consequences beyond the loss of just the three points.
Apart from a Bruno 25 yorder from which Ally Maxwell made a fine one-handed save, a flurry of five bookings was the main talking point of a first half which could be best described as a non-event. There was a bit more activity at the start of the second period. Neil McCann cut in and a near post save from Ally Maxwell and at the other end Ray McKinnon shot past from a Dave Bowman pass. But goalmouth action remained the exception rather than the rule.
The outcome of the game was decided 17 minutes from time when McCann went down in the box as he took on Owen Coyle and after appearing to wave play on referee Pocock pointed to the spot and John Robertson converted from the spot to extend Hearts unbeaten run against United at Tynecastle to 21 league games.
