Normally, the last thing you want to be facing is a side which has just parted company with their manager, but that was the task in prospect at Rugby Park where Alex Totten had been toppled as Bobby Williamson had been installed as caretaker boss.
However, United set their stall out to dictate play from the start which enabled new signing Sieb Dijkstra, the only change from the side which drew with Dunfermline, to ease himself into the Tannadice line-up.
In fact, the big keeper had only one moment of non-routine activity collecting a Holt header at the second attempt shortly before half-time. As manager Tommy McLean highlighted after the game, the two goal winning margin was the only minor complaint he could level at his side's afternoons work.
Even before Kjell Otokson scored the the first of his two goals, McPherson was forced to clear off the line from a Lars Zetterlund shot, but ten minutes later, his fellow Swede Kjell Olofsson was on target. Player coach Maurice Malpas did his best to claim the credit after his shot came back off the underside of the bar, but Kjell Olofsson beat Meldrum to the bouncing ball and headed in from inside the six yard box.
With Killie struggling to make any sort of impression on the game, the points were effectively wrapped up six minutes into the second half when Andy McLaren left two defenders in his wake before crossing for Kjell Olofsson to stoop and direct a header inside the near post. Despite being in total command right up the final whistle, there was no more scoring, although there should have been especially in the five minutes from the end when Andy McLaren collected a Dave Bowman pass to tee up a chance for Gary McSwegan but the substitute's well struck drive from 12 yards was tipped over the bar by Meldrum.
