Wins over Rangers were a rare breed for all Premier Division clubs at this time, but United inflicted the second of the Glasgow side's season upon them as the first half of the home league programme came to a close. The match was televised live on Sky Sports and a nationwide audience saw former United defender Richard Gough send an involuntary header into his own net after 66 minutes to clinch United's first win over Rangers at Tannadice for a little over five years.
The game got off to a furious start. Lars Zetterlund tested Goram with a shot from the edge of the box in the very first minute from an opening carved out by his fellow Swede Kjell Olofsson, McCoist immediately replied with a first time effort which curled past the far post. Thereafter, there was a more studious approach by both sides. Sieb Dijkstra, making his home debut, wasn't called into serious action until just after the half hour mark when Craig Moore found himself all alone on the right hand side of goal, but Sieb spread himself to deny the Ranqers defender.
United survived a few sticky spells and opened the second half on the offensive. Andy Goram was at full stretch to keep out Andy McLaren's flick as he capitalised on a Paul Gascoigne error. United's hard work reaped its reward when an Andy McLaren cross was headed into the Rangers net by former United man, Richard Gough. This was enough to ensure United left with three points and at the same time, Tommy McLean's United became the first side to prevent Rangers scoring in a domestic game this season. The only sour note of the evening was the stretchering off of Neil Duffy with a serious facial injury a mere eight minutes after he had replaced Mark Perry.
