Having visited Forthbank earlier in the Coca-Cola Cup the Tangerines were again drawn to play at the same venue, this time to launch their Scottish Cup campaign. Notably this was to be the first ever meeting of the sides in the competition.
United were met with stubborn resistance in the first half as the Stirling defence held firm. Despite a man of the match display from Mark McGeown in the Albion goal who thwarted numerous attempts from Kjell Olofsson, the hosts were rarely seen in an attacking sense with Sieb Dijkstra largely redundant at the other end.
Crucially, 7 minutes after the restart, the visitors went ahead after Andy McLaren whipped in a cross from the left which the on-rushing Robbie Winters finished first time into the corner of the net from 10 yards. With Stirling still in it as long as the single goal deficit was there it was of great relief when the tie was settled in United's favour with 8 minutes to play. A magnificent Jamie Dolan reverse pass found Olofsson, who squared to Gary McSwegan to scoop the ball into the net at the far post. This proved enough to ensure the terrors progressed to the next round of the competition.
