The run of eight consecutive victories came to an end with a disappointing draw against Hibs as United failed to score for the first time this year.
A strong blustery wind exacerbated the low entertainment value as the visitors packed the midfield and limited the hosts to very few openings. The only moment of real note during the first half was a fine save from Scotland's number two keeper Jim Leighton who clawed away a header by Jim McInally.
Things were only marginally better after the break with United's most fluent move of the afternoon coming in the 62nd minute. Goal scoring hero of the previous week Gary McSwegan crossed for Lars Zetterlund whose header came back off the base of the post. 3 minutes later Leighton was again Hibs saviour when he blocked from Kjell Olofsson at point blank range. The game opened up slightly during the final quarter, allowing the visitors to emerge as an attacking force for the first time. Chris Jackson forced a save out of Sieb Dijkstra as did Kevin Harper with the United keeper holding his effort at the second attempt. Only Dijkstra's out-stretched leg then kept out a Greg Miller header as Hibs enjoyed their best spell of the game by far. The Easter Road side however suffered a major setback when Pat McGinlay was shown a straight red card following a challenge on Erik Pedersen. Just when it seemed the Tangerines would be firm favourites to go on and snatch the win it was the visitors who nearly did so, with Jackson dragging a low drive wide of target after finding himself clean through. A largely forgettable afternoon therefore ended goalless as United struggled to match the heights of their superb performance against Celtic the week prior.
