United recorded their first ever home Premier Division win over Raith, but in truth it was in far from convincing fashion. A point brought home by manager Tommy McLean who felt the victory and Stewart McKimmie's debut performance were the only plus factors to emerge from the game.
Perhaps the other exception to that indictment was the quality of the opening goal. Fashioned by Ray McKinnons searching 50 yard pass which fell to Kjell Olofsson on the left. His inch-perfect cross being touched home by John Millar, despite Robbie Winters close proximity producing strong claims that he had scored!
No doubt, however, about the authenticity of his claims to Uniteds second goal. Maurice Malpas banged in a shot from a corner which had been cleared to him and Robbie Winters smacked home the rebound. Duffield hooked home a consolation goal for Raith whose play belied their lowly league position.
