Match Report

United travelled west to take on the SPL Champions elect determined to avoid a repeat of the heavy defeats that they had already suffered from the Parkhead side so far this season. On the team front, the United gaffer made only one change to his starting line up with the return of 18 year old full back Jamie McCunnie after injury. He took the right back spot and last week's replacement, Stuart Duff. moved forward into a midfield role. That meant striker David Winters dropped to the substitutes bench where he was joined by Jim Paterson, who also returned from injury. Derek Lilley earned a place on the bench after missing two games through suspension.

It came as no surprise when Celtic came out on the attack straight away and took the game right to United. In the 2nd minute Crainey went close to scoring at the back post when he got on the end of a cross from Guppy, but he slid it just wide form six yards. Just minutes later, young defender McCracken had to look alert to head the ball clear from the waiting Larsson after another cross into the heart of the United box. Aljofree. who was playing in midfield, became the game's first booking when he was yellow carded for a foul on Lambert. United had to withstand almost constant pressure eaHy on as the home side tried to get the goal that would settle them. In the 13th minute Moravcik headed a right wing cross from Agathe over the bar at the back post when he should have done better. In the 16th minute United ventured forward showing some nice touches on the ball in a move involving Aljofree, McCracken and Miller. The move was abruptly halted when Thompson took a heavy challenge from Boyd. A good opportunity to put some pressure on the Celtic defence was wasted, however, when Aljofree swung his cross too deep and it went behind for a goal kick. Despite the poor quality of the cross, this clearly gave the Tangerines a bit of confidence and they started to stroke the ball around well, although the Celtic defence were proving a difficult obstacle to overcome. In the 23rd minute Gallacher produced an excellent save to tip a header from Larsson over the bar from dose range. Celtic went even closer a minute
later when Agathe crossed from the right and tanson just missed the ball with his head as the goal was at his mercy. In the 33rd minute United were presented with a chance when Lennon fouled Thompson on the edge of the area. Captain Griffin curled a free kick around the wall but it went straight at Douglas. In the 40th minute Petrov squandered a great chance when he miss kicked from six yards with the goal gaping. Stilian Petrov made amends a minute later when he played a great 1-2 with Larsson running through into the box to fire a right foot shot past Gallacher and open the scoring.

Celtic started the second half in the same manner as they had started the first by laying siege to the United goal in search of the goal that would kill the game off. After forcing several eariy corners, Celtic went dose in the 56th minute when Larsson headed a cross from Guppy over the bar from the near post area. Two minutes later a fine run by Moravcik saw him beat Duff then fire in a shot at goal but a brilliant blocking tackle by Griffin cleared the danger for the visitors. United then responded and Miller tried his luck from close range but saw his strike blocked by Mjallby and cleared by Boyd. Miller looked a constant danger to Celtic but struggled at times through a lack of support. In the 67th minute United made their first change when Paterson came on to replace teenager Duff. In the 73rd minute the crowd witnessed a fine piece of individual skill when Agathe beat three defenders on a long mazy run and he squared for Larsson, only for an excellent interception from McCunnie to thwart the home side again, Celtic substitute Smith ran onto a through ball from Lambert and struck a fierce shot against the bar in the 77th minute as Celtic tried to increase their lead. Thompson then went off to be replaced by Winters in United's last throw of the dice. In the 89th minute Miller arrived just too late at the back post for a Paterson corner and the last chance of the match was gone.
