United looked to find solace in the League Cup after struggling to find a win so far in the League campaign. A changed team faced a difficult trip to Recreation Park Alloa as they set about securing their first win of the season.
The hosts frustrated the Terrors for much of the first half with chances proving to be at a premium but they did manage the all important breakthrough in the 36th minute. Stephen McConalogue took advantage of a Cairns error to slot home confidently to take a lot of pressure off his team mates. Alloa responded straight away and Alan Combe saved well from Hamilton. In 41 minutes however a Hugh Davidson cross from the left wing was met by Stephen McConalogue at the far post and his superb header gave Cairns in the Alloa no chance.
Davidson went close in 48 minutes but was flagged offside, as was David Hannah 30 seconds later. United upped the tempo and the increased pace paid off as Stephen McConalogue completed his hat trick with a great solo goal after De Vos headed down a Davidson corner in 55 minutes. Mathie went close with a snap shot in 76 minutes and Hasney Aljofree shot wide in 80 minutes after great work from Mathie and Hamilton. Hannah had a goal attempt chopped off in 81 minutes but this wasn't to take any shine off a good nights work from the Tangerines.
