Match Report

United started with Argentine midfielder Marcelino Galoppo in the line up for a debut along with his fellow-countryman, striker Gustavo Fuentes, who partnewe'd Mvondo Atangana in attack.

Easton had a chance early on when a header from Atangana’s cross was directed straight at Brown. A few minutes later Hannah had a header from a right wing cross that flew just wide. There was a blow for United midway through the first half when they had to bring on Licina for the injured McCracken and within two minutes the United man was being lectured to by referee Rowbottom for pulling back Kanchelskis on the right wing. Things were to get worse for United on the half hour when Hannah was stretchered off and replaced by Venetis. A superb clearing header by Licina thwarted Negri in 33 minutes but a minute later Andrei Kanchelskis scored with a fine right wing shot. In the 35th minute Venetis shoots but Brown saves easily. Marco Negri netted in forty minutes from a right wing cross but his effort was ruled offside. Galoppo was booked in 41 minutes and Venetis followed him into the ref’s book a minute later. Seconds later Rangers were to go two ahead from a great Jorge Albertz free kick. Just on the stroke of half-time Easton was sent off for a tackle on Van Bronckhorst.

It was all Rangers in the second half and a free kick was awarded when Aljofree pulled back Kanchelskis. The United defender received a booking as a result. Negri then headed wide from the resultant Albertz cross. Negri and Licina went down in the box in 69 minutes but the Rangers penalty claims were waived away. Giovanni van Bronckhorst sealed the game with Rangers third. Dodds then replaced Albertz and within minutes fire in a thunderous strike that had to be brilliantly tipped over by Combe. United stood firm as the match ran towards full time. Indeed, on the stroke of full time a superb Aljofree free kick was tipped onto the post by Brown.
