Match Report

Buchan tried a volley in the first minute following a throw-in but it was too high and seconds later at the other end Combe saved a Baltacha kick. In the fifth minute a great pass from Heaney released Buchan on the right and his first-time cross was struck just wide by Hamilton as United went very close. 20 minutes in and Combe was forced to make a fantastic save from a Yardley shot to keep the score level. Miller showed great skill in the thirty-fourth minute and won a free kick on the edge of the box. Miller’s low free-kick could only be parried by Scrimgour and the onrushing Beto Naveda knocked in the rebound from close range. A minute later St. Mirren went down to ten men when Brown was red-carded after a horrific challenge on Aljofree.

United almost had a chance in the 46th minute but Naveda was adjudged to have fouled a defender and play was stopped. Miller won a corner in the sixty-first minute and Aljofree’s kick was headed just wide by de Vos. In the 67th minute St. Mirren drew level when a surging run by Walker set up Dutch substitute Maikel Renfurm who scored with a strong shot from the edge of the box which slipped underneath Combe. A minute later only a great save by Combe prevented McGarry scoring again for St. Mirren. More pressure from United followed as Aljofree won a corner in seventy-one minutes and sixty seconds later Hamilton headed a Buchan cross just wide. It was all United as ten-man Saints appeared to have settled for a draw and their options narrowed as an injury to Paul Rudden effectively reduced the home team to nine players.
