Match Report

Sky TV had decided to broadcast the fixture live giving supporters home and abroad a chance to see both sides in action. Manager Alex Smith knew he did not have to fire up his players for this one and allowed his most recent signing, the £80,000 acquisition from Oxford Derek Lilley, to make his debut.

It was a decision that would pay dividends as Derek not only repaid the manager, but that of the Tannadice faithful with a memorable goal. For a quarter-of-an-hour the home side faced the gauntlet of the multimillion-pound side and fought bravely to contain the visitors. United were bombarded with crosses with McCann firing in at every given opportunity. The experience of the winger was causing concern for United's David McCracken but David stuck to his man marking task throughout his time on the park and frustrated the winger on many occasions. Rangers finally went ahead when Mols rolled a neat little pass onto the foot of Claudia Reyna, who duly took full advantage of the situation and fired the ball into the net. United knew that they had it all to do and staged a spirited fight back and were soon rewarded for their valiant efforts. A mistake by Lorenzo Amoruso allowed Beta Naveda to steal possession and knock the ball to Derek Lilley who thundered it past Klos from 20-yards.

Rangers could not break down United's defence with de Vos linking well with Lauchlan to foil their attacks. Former Rangers player Charlie Miller once again showed his class and gave his old club some food for thought. This was only United's second point against Rangers in thirteen outings. The point was hard earned and gave the home support plenty of hope for the games ahead.
