Manager Alex Smith stuck with the same starting eleven that battled for a point at Rugby Park last weekend.
The Terrors nearly took the lead in four minutes. Quick footwork by McCunnie saw the young defender cross for the head of Hamilton. Only a superb one-handed save from Roy prevented United from making the perfect start. In 16 minutes the visiting defence blocked Charlie Miller’s rasping effort from 20 yards. Hannah latched on to the rebound and directed the ball back towards goal, signaling a scramble in the six-yard box, however the defenders once again clear. In 32 minutes the United fans celebrated wildly when Charlie Miller scored an absolute beauty from 20 yards. He had the ball on his right foot, and then switched to his left before hammering the ball into the top right-hand corner. The United fans had hardly any time to catch their breath before it was time to celebrate again. Easton’s cross in 35 minutes from the right was met by the head of David Hannah, who promptly dispatched the ball into the same spot as Miller’s goal.
St Mirren made one change at the break, replacing MacKenzie with McGarry.
With the game switching from end-to-end, United looked for the killer goal, and Saints had to fight to get themselves back in the match. In 66 minutes Hannah cut inside from the left to fire in a shot that flew narrowly wide from 15 yards.
In 80 minutes United scored again. Hamilton’s cross from the right dropped for Miller, who then fed Derek Lilley to stab past Roy to take the score to 3-0. United fans were still celebrating when the team scored a fourth. Good possession football, saw United string many passes together, enabling Griffin to cross for Jim Hamilton to head home. It was a goal similar to the one scored by Jim Paterson against Motherwell earlier in the season.
