Match Report

Playing less than 48 hours after making that disappointing exit from Europe, Dave Bowman and Cralg Brewster retained their places in the side after coming on as substitutes against Tatran, whilst Gary Bollan was drafted in at Ibrox after not even figuring in the squad which had travelled to Slovakia.

He was given the unenviable task of trying to keep Laudrup quiet and it was the Dane who sparked off most danger to the United defence. The much maligned Alan Main was the man United had to thank for keeping them in the game in the early stages, diving to save a Hateley shot after 12 minutes before making a remarkable double save three minutes later. First blocking Mikhailitchenko's angled drive and then holding Miller's pointblank effort.

The United keeper diverted away a McCall shot after 24 minutes with his foot, but had to finally admit defeat a minute later when Hateley seized on the loose ball after a Laudrup run and stepped inside before banging the ball low past Alan Main from the edge of the box. Retrieving the ball from the net was virtually the keeper's last contribution because a grain strain forced him to come off to be replaced by Henrik Jorgensen and the Dane continued the heroics of Alan Main with a great save from fellow Dane Brian Ladrup immediately before the interval and a penalty save from Hateley after Gary Bollan brought down Laudrup early in the second half.

By now United had weathered the storm and with a little more conviction in attack could well have equalised. Twice within a minute the Tangerines passed up two great opportunities. First, Jerren Nixon drifted past Moore and McPherson before striking the top of the bar from 8 yards. A minute later an even better chance went abegging. Gough was short with a pass back which allowed Craig Brewster in on Goram, but he scooped it over the bar. Three minutes from the end of the match Laudrup movedd forward In the inside left channel before bulleting a 20 yarder past Henrlk Jorgenaen.

Golac commented, "It has been a bad 48 hours for us. We did play better in the second half after looking tired in the first half"
