After five postponements there appeared little danger of this game not going ahead when for once it failed to rain on a Tuesday when we were due to play at Firhill. However, there was a minor scare for those who arrived early to find that there was a pitch inspection an hour before kickoff and it was only 45 minutes before the start that the referee actually passed the well-sanded surface fit for play. In view of the outcome, it is perhaps a pity that the game in fact went ahead!
Conditions were inevitably heavy and play was very scrappy at the start though the first chance fell to Thistle when a Welsh shot was deflected over. The game burst into life after nine minutes when McWilliams was through and went down after a challenge by Kelham O'Hanlon just outside the box. Within seconds the referee brandished a yellow card but that was for Pittman who went right through on Robbie Winters.
United's best chance of the game came on 12 minutes when Jim Mclnally played Jerren Nixon with the ball and the winger surged through the heart of the Jags defence, but Walker blocked his shot from 8 yards and the angle beat him from the rebound. The surface then created a chance for Partick as the ball stuck in the mud as Dave Bowman tried to clear, letting McWilliams in and Kelham O'Hanlon just managed to touch his effort from 20 yards round the post.
Thistle undoubtedly had the better of the exchanges until the interval, although skipper Maurice Malpas sent a dipping shot narrowly over. United began the second half more brightly and Sergio sent in a snap-shot from twenty yards which Walker held. But that was almost the Brazilian's last contribution because Craig Brewster replaced him eight minutes later and shortly afterwards Scott Crabbe came on for Robbie Winters. Just as United began to dictate proceedings, disaster struck. Craig made a run in the inside-left channel, but the tight angle cost him a shooting chance and instead he turned quickly to blast the ball across the face of the goal where it found substitute Tom Smith who from almost as equally as acute an angle hammered the ball high into the net.
Only a header from Gordan Petric was deflected and tipped over the bar by Walker offered us any hopes of an equaliser and by the time Cameron chipped the ball forward for Wayne Foster to run in and score a second, United's fate was already sealed.
