United travelled to Broomfield with Willie Pettigrew recalled to the squad for the first time this season. After breaking his collar bone in the pre-season match with West Ham, he had now recovered enough for a place on the bench, with Iain Phillip promoted in place of Dave Narey in the starting eleven. With the international defender suffering from a hip injury that has forced his withdrawal from Scotland's World Cup match against Sweden, he now looks doubtful for United's midweek trip to Poland. Having been sent home from training on Thursday with flu, Eamonn Bannon had recovered in time to start.
Airdrie defender George Anderson almost made it a dream debut following his transfer from Morton by out jumping the United defence and sending a header inches past the post in the third minute. United came even closer to scoring moments later, when Billy Kirkwood's header from a Frank Kopel cross came off the cross bar. Unfortunately the match did not continue with the same excitement, as both defences stood firm in the pouring rain.
Anderson threatened again in the second half, with a header cleared off the line by Derek Addison. However, defences dominated and the goalless scoreline summed up the action. This was the first time United had failed to score, but after four draws in five Premier outings, they were still without a win in the league.
