United travelled to Paisley with the same starting eleven that returned from Poland with a 0-0 draw in the UEFA Cup in midweek.
Early chances fell to both teams, with Paul Sturrock breaking clear in the 5th minute, only to be thwarted by St Mirren keeper Billy Thomson beating him to the ball. Jimmy Bone made a great run down the left wing, but Hamish McAlpine cut out his dangerous cross. Beckett had a chance in the 22nd minute, but his shot found the side netting. St Mirren broke the deadlock two minutes later. Bone set Billy Stark clear on the right, and his cross was bulleted home by Frank McDougall with Hamish McAlpine having no chance. Four minutes from half-time, Bone had a chance to double their lead, but shot widely over the bar.
Colin Campbell came on for Graeme Payne in the second half, and with Dave Narey moving further forward, United came more into it. Billy Stark had two great efforts that went very close in the last quarter, and it was the forward who was involved in St Mirren's second. Stark was fouled and from the resultant free-kick, Richardson cut the ball back and Billy Stark made the home win secure. After six matches, United were still waiting for their first League win of the season.
