Graham Payne dropped out to make way for lan Gibson, who was ineligible for United's midweek UEFA Cup tie. Payne was on the substitutes' bench along with Willie Pettigrew. Hearts, who scored their first league goal at Tynecastle last week, were without Bobby Robinson. Masterton took his place.
Applying the early pressure, United got the best possible start when they went ahead after only two minutes. Paul Sturrock chased a long defensive clearance and young 'keeper Westwater looked rather slow to come off his line. Sturrock's first toe-ended effort was blocked by the 'keeper, but he followed up to
run the ball over the line. United went further ahead in 35 minutes after determined running on the left wing by Bannon won a corner. The corner, taken by the former Tynecastle favourite, was flicked on by Paul Hegarty at the near post, sending the ball towards the top left-hand corner of the goal. Although Shields got a head to it the referee and linesman judged the ball has crossed the line.
Hearts, looking for a quick goal, provided the initial pressure in the second half. The closest they come to scoring was when Gibson drove a shot across goal from the edge of the box. There was a walk-out from one section of the ground when United scored their third after 77 minutes. The Hearts defence was left wide open when McAlpine hit a long clearance downfield and Paul Sturrock was able to latch on to the ball and comfortably shoot past the helpless Westwater to kill the game stone dead.
