Match Report

Manager Jim McLean made three changes from the side which was defeated by Rangers. Badly bruised ribs kept Jim McInally out of contention and Ray McKinnon returned. Mixu Paatelainen came in for Andy McLaren with Darren Jackson replacing the injured Victor Ferreyra. Right from the start we went on the attack and Reid was in action in the eighth minute when he just managed to save from Darren Jackson after a knock down from Duncan Ferguson. Five minutes later the big striker hit the post following a long throw by Dave Bowman. In the 16th minute, however, Duncan Ferguson played the ball out to Alex Cleland on the right. He cut inside past Findlay and Tortolano and his cross was side-footed strongly past Reid from six yards by Mixu Paatelainen who reacted quicker than a rather static home defence. Hibs who had started brightly had fallen out of the game and had Mclntyre booked for a foul on Darren Jackson in the twenty second minute. Almost immediately Darren hooked Ray McKinnon's free kick past Reid, but just past the post. Reid then saved from Darren Jackson after Duncan Ferguson had cut the ball back as we continued to dominate. Ten minutes from the interval a Mclntyre error let Duncan Ferguson in but the big strikers shot from the edge of the box was well held by Reid. Hibs were just too deliberate in attack to cause us any real problems until Guido Van de Kamp tipped over a Mclntyre shot on the stroke of halftime, but that had been the home sides only shot on goal during the first half.

Hibs undoubtedly came more into the picture in the second period, but still lacked penetration and when we went further ahead with 16 minutes left, the match looked as good as ever. Skipper, Maurice Malpas ghosted past the Hibs defence to curl the ball past Reid into the corner of the net from some 15 yards out. However, Hibs rallied and Gareth Evans pulled one back within a minute when he scored with a near post shot from the left. Minutes later Gareth Evans was sent clear and hit a low shot past Guido Van de Kamp to hit a surprise equaliser. An even bigger shock was in store for us. Hibs scored a third goal within five minutes to completely turn the game around. Keith Wright was the culprit as he headed a Weir cross past Guido Van de Kamp to deny us even a point after having established a two goal lead.
