It looked as though the thrill a minute stuff on offer against Aberdeen had spilled over into this match, well, for the first two minutes anyway. Some 75 seconds were on the clock when Darren Jackson gave us the lead. Maurice Malpas's throw in found Darren Jackson who dragged the ball towards the face of the goal before turning sharply and firing in a low drive. Campbell Money got his hand to the ball. but could only push it on to the post and the ball ran along the line before entering the net just inside the far post.
To say our lead was short-lived would be an understatement! Just 50 seconds later Stikroth sent over a cross to the far post where Kenny McDowell sent in a looping header over Alan Main into the far post. Billy McKinlay then sent Darren Jackson clear, but Darren's shot slipped past the far post. McKinlay then created another opportunity with a finely executed lobbed pass to Ray McKinnon. His cross into the middle was met by Christian Dailly at the far post, but his effort went wide. A minute later St. Mirren posed their first seriouis threat when Archibald picked up a loose ball and stabbed in a shot which Alan Main turned round the post.
Although we had dominated the first half, the teams went in level at half-time. Ten minutes after the interval we had our best chance of the second period. Christian Dailly robbed Black on the right, went to the bye-line and cut the ball back to Ray McKinnon who side-footed a shot wide of the near post from six yards. An accidental clash involving Miodrag Krivokapic and Torfarson saw the Icelander assisted off and stretchered away. Later it was learned that he had a fractured cheek-bone. Saints, in fact. enjoyed their best spell of the game in the closing stages. Twelve minutes from the end Alan Main saved from Stickroth, but it was in the last five minutes that Saints came close to grabbing a victory. Alan Main dropped a cross as he fell to the ground and Wishart followed up, but the danger was cleared. A minute later Alan Main was again in action, saving at point-blank range from Steve Archibald.
