Last season United took all eight available points off Thistle and continued that fine form in their first away match of the new term. The home side didn't threaten until midway through the first half and by then Nelson had tipped over Gary Bollan's powerful header from a Paddy Connolly cross. United, however, did go ahead in the 26th minute when Christian Dailly met Gary Bollan's corner to send a header flashing into the net. Thistle finally made an impact as the interval approached. Cameron, who'd earlier been denied by Dave Narey's block, ran free in the inside left channel but his shot hit the far post and Brian Welsh came to the rescue as English tried to net the rebound.
Just as it seemed United a grip on the game Thistle equalised Britton and Kinnaird worked the ball down the left and the letter's low cross threaded its way through to Albert Craig whose half-hit shot screwed past Alan Main at the near post. Three minutes later, however, United regained the lead with a spitting image of the first goal, this time Christian Dailly bulletted an Andy McLaren corner between Nelson's despairing arms. Again Thistle got back into the game with Byrne prominent in midfield, but United survived to maintain their jinx over the Jags who haven't won a league game against United since October 1977.
