Match Report

The day was bitterly cold and only Tannadice's undersoil heating allowed this match to go ahead. The Arklay Street end of the ground was closed because it was snow covered and the 6,114 fans who braved the elements saw little to make them forget the chill in the air. Even from the very early stages it was evident that this could well be a repeat of the goalless draw at Easter Road two months previously. True, Houchen did get in a header from an Evans cross after four minutes which Alan Main saved at his near post, but thereafter Hibs funnelled back in numbers to form a ten man defensive barrier. Our neat build-up play was rarely matched by the requisite finishing power. The nearest we came to scoring in the first half, and, indeed, probably in the whole match came in the 33rd minute. Billy McKinlay getting in an angled shot from the left which bobbed past the far post. Towards half-time we did begin to find openings in the Hibs defence, but unfortunately our shooting was wayward. Snow was falling when the second half opened and Paddy Connolly forced Goram into a save when he cut in from the left, but the Hibs keeper kept out Paddy's near post shot though the ball did trundle over for a corner.

With the snow falling even more heavily, the referee called for an orange ball to replace the original white one, even though there was no snow lying on the pitch. Immediately, Paddy Connolly sent in a shot over the bar, but John Clark was off target a minute later, taking a Jackson flick and sending in a low drive which Goram saved. There was a let-off for us at the other end after 57 minutes when Houchen miskicked in front of goal, but little was seen of Hibs in an attacking sense after that. At the other end Goram's only other call to action was when Paddy Connolty dragged the ball along the edge of the box before firing in a shot which Goram saved at his left-hand post. As manager Jim McLean pointed out afterwards, "we had 20 shots at goal and only three on target". That sums up a disappointing game watched by our lowest crowd of the season.
