Match Report

We maintained our unbeaten record at Tannadice against Dunfermline with a narrow, but thoroughly deserved, victory. Apart from a brief spell in the last ten minutes of the match. we were always in control and really should have won by more than a single Duncan Ferguson goal. Playing into a biting easterly wind, our first assault on goal came after five minutes when Ray McKinnon chested the ball down outside the box before sending in a volley which went just over. Two minutes later a flick from the head of Duncan Ferguson fell to Hamish French, and although he didn't connect properly, Rhodes only saved his shot at the second attempt. Apart from a ninth minute Kozma shot which went wide of the near post, Dunfermline hardly figured as an attacking force in the first half. A lovely flowing move after 19 minutes almost gave us the lead. Freddy Van Der Hoorn's long free-kick was knocked on by Duncan Ferguson to John Clark whose first time flick went to Raymond McKinnon. The youngster hit a tremendous first time volley which looked a certain scorer until Rhodes somehow managed to tip the ball round the post. From the corner John Clark saw his shot blocked on the line. The action continued towards Rhodes' goal when Ray McKinnon broke from midfield, played a one-two with Hamish French, but failed to hit the target with his shot. Only a last gasp intervention by Moyes prevented John O'Neil counting in the 33rd minute.

Wayward finishing and some fine saves continued to keep Dunfermline in the match as the second half got underway. Rhodes tipped over a Duncan Ferguson header and then made a straight forward save from a Jim Mclnally shot. The Pars English goalkeeper was again their saviour in the 52nd minute. John O'Neil played the ball into Dave Bowman's path. He blocked his first effort with his feet and then saw Dave Bowman head the return over. Not until the 64th minute was Rhodes finally beaten. Raymond McKinnon sent over a corner to the far post which John O'Neil headed down and Duncan Ferguson wheeled to tuck the ball past Rhodes for what was his first league goal for the club. Freddy Van Der Hoorn then came forward, but his shot from just inside the box raged inches over. With eleven minutes left Dunfermline got their first corner of the match to give a fair indication of just how much superiority we enjoyed. The visitor's actually won a total of three corners in a three minute spell during which Maurice Malpas blocked a Kozma shot on the line and McCathie headed narrowly over. It would, however, have been a traversty had Dunfermline salvaged anything from a game for which they were under the collar for all but that brief spell in the last ten minutes.
