We went into this game in the knowledge that a point was a necessity if we were to finish above Celtic and qualify for Europe, provided Aberdeen won the cup. Free transport had been laid on for United fans and whilst they would have been disappointed at the entertainment there were two bonuses. Firstly we got that valuable point and Skipper Maurice Malpas made his comeback after injury to confirm his fitness for the World Cup in Italy.
There was only one moment of anxiety, or should I say two, as to whether we would take a point out of this game. That was ten minutes from half-time when St. Mirren contrived to hit the woodwork twice within the space of seconds! McGill went clean through, but struck the left-hand post and from the rebound Shaw promptly knocked the ball off the right-hand post! From thereon in the match had all the hallmarks of an end-of-season goalless draw and so it proved to be.
