Match Report

A last minute rearrangement to United's half back line forced Willie MacFadyen to switch George Mitchell to right half in place of the injured Earle Downie after the latter failed to respond to treatment following a knock against Cowdenbeath the week before. Jack Dewar filled the void left by Mitchell, taking over at left half.

It looked as though United were set to lay the Boghead bogie to rest when they got off to a great start through Peter McKay, scoring inside the first minute. The goal was a soft one for the "Sons" to concede and before long the homesters had buckled down and were making a better fist of it. United remained the aggressors though, and were it not for resolute defending from Dumbarton and a handful of "neck or nothing" saves from George Paton, the visitors may have found themselves taking a much healthier lead in with them at the break.

Having found it hard going in the first half, the Boghead men got back on level terms in the second, eventually pulling a goal back through Jimmy Parlane who finished after a neat side step from Tommy Irwin. An injury to Parlane's eye saw the inside forward forced to withdraw as the second half progressed, reducing Dumbarton to ten men. United, though, could not capitalise on the man advantage, and shortly after, Parlane returned with two stitches applied to the wound.

There was no further scoring, and MacFadyen's men left Dunbartonshire with half the spoils to get their league campaign underway.
