Match Report

United's hopes of promotion took a turn for the worse at Tannadice on this Monday afternoon as the fast approach and man to man play paid dividends for the visitors, Hamilton Academical. Debuting for United was the amateur student Dave Stratton, a left footer who slotted in next to Doug Berrie.

The homesters enjoyed very little of the play in the first half and by the time of the interval they were three goals down. The first came after nine minutes when former Arbroath player Charlie McMullen split the defence with a pass and Jacky Swan was on hand to net past John Boyd. Swan struck again on the half hour mark, taking advantage of a high ball which deceived Berrie, by trapping it and crashing it home into the far corner. The third arrived eight minutes before the break when slack marking allowed Charlie McMullen to score inside the six yard box.

United did improve in the second half and in fact, Frank Quinn found the net after a Bobby Ross free kick from 30 yards had rattled the post, but referee McKerchar disallowed it for offside. The United pressure against a comfortable Accies eventually paid off with six minutes remaining when the unfortunate Walter Rothera turned the ball past his own keeper from a Frank Quinn cross. The goal was too little too late, however, as the Accies left Dundee with both points.
