Andy Rolland has suffered from a cold all week but made it into the side for this match. Stuart Markland was added to the travelling party. Alec Gray and Alan Miller dropped out of the Raith side. The conditions for this match were terrible and this affected the attendance on the day.
United started with a strong wind at their backs and they used this to their advantage to dominate the early stages. Henry crossed for Reid early on and but his effort was fluffed leaving the Raith 'keeper to catch easily. The provider then came close himself when Henry got his head to a Rolland cross but the ball bounced past the post. With 20 minutes played, United get themselves in front. Hogg swung a great cross flashing into the goalmouth and Davie Wilson turned it home. Raith put pressure on in the lead up to half time in attempt to get level. They forced three corners in five minutes but could not capitalise from any of them.
Raith kicked off the second half in great style and had their best chance of the match after 58 minutes. Brand squared the ball to Mike Judge and he hit a screamer heading for the corner of the net. Mackay was forced into a breath-taking save in the mud to prevent the equaliser. A minute later Falconer let a loose ball in the box spin past him after he had lost his marker. The wind which had been United's friend in the first half was now their foe. Raith threw everything at the United goal in the remaining minutes and Falconer had another great chance when Sneddon centred for him but he rushed the shot and it spun wide.
