Lashing rain greeted the teams ahead of this match. The bad weather had kept many fans away and an injury kept Jim Baxter away.
Within seconds of this match starting the goalmouth at the United end had cut up badly. Rangers had the wind at their backs in the first half and Johnstone tried to take advantage when he whistled in a thumping effort that flew wide. Then Greig had a go but his shot soared a little too high. Willie Waddell was in the dugout for the first time and it looked like the Rangers players were out to impress. Stein was next to test Mackay with the post coming to the 'keeper's rescue. The goal was coming and in 14 minutes Rangers took a deserved lead. Stein cut the ball back and Willie Henderson fired through a ruck of players into the net. Amazingly, within 60 seconds United were back level with their first shot of the game. Davie Wilson crossed for Alan Gordon and he smashed home from a narrow angle. Mackay saved well from Greig late in the half but their were no further goals prior to the interval.
Rangers looked back in the mood in the second half and Mathieson went close with a long range drive. Then Penman cut back for Stein but he missed the ball by a whisker as he slid in through the mud. Rangers then looked to have a good penalty claim when Penman was grounded but the referee adjudged it to be just outside the box. Rangers did finally get the goal there dominance deserved when Stein knocked the ball past Mackay to seal full points.
