Despite the overall disappointment to the Tayside following, the final scoreline was a fair reflection of this Ne'er Day clash. Certainly the nine thousand onlookers enjoyed the fare.
During the first half, it was the Muirton side which had by far the majority of the chances to move in front. Fred Aitken missed three good scoring chances for the home side in the first half. The worst being a weak header past the post after Connolly had laid it on a plate from him in front of goal.
In the second half, an error by Donald Mackay allowed big Saint handyman 'Buck' Bill McCarry in for a 66th minute decider. The United keeper should have cleared an attempt at goal, but allowed the ball to run free in the goal area, enabling McCarry to find the net with ease. It was unfortunate for the visiting keeper as in the same move he had brought off a wonder save from a great Connolly cross.
