There was nothing very memorable about this mid-week visit to Rugby Park, other than for the fact that it was to be the last time that Jim McLean was to feature in a competitive match against the club he was to later manage.
United were coming off the back of a disappointing 4-0 cup defeat the previous Saturday and fared little better on their travels further west on League business four day's later on a frosty Rugby Park surface. Killie put on a bold display of fast attacking football and United held them at bay for 40 minutes before the home side broke down United's stuffy defence. Morrison heading in a Cook cross.
Cook made it two after 63 minutes with a knee-high drive from 15 yards. The wee winger then set up Killie's third with another cross which Ross Mathie converted with his head six minutes from the end. Within a minute Ian Mitchell pulled one back, scoring from a suspiciously offside position, but it was purely a consolation counter as Kilie ran out comfortable winners.
