Kenny Cameron was left on the bench for this match. United were on a very inconsistent run with two wins, three defeats and a draw in their last six league games.
United scored first through Ian Scott and Ian Mitchell who was the most cultured player on the pitch got their second. Ayr meantime scored two of their own to tie the game at 2-2. The as time drew to a close Mitchell send Kenny Cameron free and he did enough to earn United both points. Rolland, Henry and Scott booked in the second half for tame offences.
It was a pity Ayr had to lose but the Tannadice side did enough to earn both points. Cameron's winner was probably no more than United deserved as they were a little bit sharper.
