Peter McKay, although not playing up to his usually spectacular standard, got United off the mark after seven minutes, and so began a period of United toying with their visitors. Frank Quinn was next to score just three minutes later, as it looked as though the abacus may be required to keep score. The hard work of Cowdenbeath's right half Alex Menzies and Robertson's perseverance stemmed the flow of chances for United as the first half drew to a close and four minutes from time, Dempsey beat Boyd to reduce the deficit.
For twenty minutes after the interval, Cowdenbeath had United off balance, and as jittery as could be. Yet, this interlude only showed how sound United's 'keeper John Boyd can be and how sadly lacking the Fifers were in decent shots on goal. United reaffirmed their authority with twenty minutes left on the clock and before long it was 3-1 to the Tannadice men, when McKay charged George Robertson into the net following a Quinn "drooper". Bobby Ross rounded off the scoring with six minutes left.
The win confirmed United's place atop Section B in the Scottish League Cup - B Division stakes, the Tannadice men having earned nine points from six games, boasting a more than satisfactory record of three wins from three at home.
